Average salaries for 2017 grads atall-time high

Average salaries for 2017grads are at an all-time high, according to a study released by the Hay Groupdivision of Korn Ferry International Inc. (NYSE: KFY).

Based on the 25 analyzedpositions, 2017 college grads in the US will make on average $49,785 annually,up 3% from the 2016 average of $48,270. Adjusted for inflation, 2017 grads willmake 14% more than those who graduated in 2007, just months before the start ofthe Great Recession.

"With unemployment ratesback down to pre-recession levels and jobs requiring more highly specializedskills, companies will need to offer competitive compensation packages if theyhope to attract top talent," said Benjamin Frost, Korn Ferry Hay Group globalproduct manager - pay.

As in years past, thoseentering science, technology, engineering and math careers can expect to garnerthe best starting salaries. The five highest-paying fields of the 25 jobs inthe analysis are:

  1. Software developer: $65,232 (31% above     average)

  2. Engineer: $63,036 (27% above average)

  3. Actuary: $59,212 (19% above average)

  4. Scientist/researcher: $58,733 (18% above     average)

  5. Environmental professional: $58,733 (18%     above average)

The five lowest-payingaverage salaries from the entry-level professional roles that were analyzedare:

  1. Buyer/logistics: $44,247 (11% below     average)

  2. Call center specialist: $41,158 (17%     below average)

  3. Claims examiner: $37,508 (25% below     average)

  4. Customer service rep.: $35,848 (28% below     average)

  5. Category assistant: $35,592 (29% below     average)

Of the cities analyzed, SanFrancisco posted the highest average salaries:

  1. San Francisco: $62,829

  2. New York: $60,190

  3. Los Angeles: $55,709

  4. Chicago: $54,515

  5. Minneapolis: $53,121

  6. Dallas: $50,084

  7. Atlanta: $49,038
