The office space of dreams

For the vast majority of us, we can only dream ofoffice spaces as forward-thinking as those of the Silicon Valley tech giants.

Apple's new campus, complete with running tracks,Google's headquarters and Tesla's head office are literally the stuff offantasy for the vast majority.

However, whilst these offices might make theheadlines, there's a less publicised, but nevertheless important trend ofoffice upgrades that make small adjustments for the benefit of their workers.

As Paula Marshall, Head of Furniture Category Sales,Office Depot, explains: "Employers have a duty of care to look after thewellbeing of their staff and from a commercial perspective there are obviousbenefits to having a happy and healthy workforce.

"Research shows that contented workers are moreproductive - and are more likely to deliver a higher quality and quantity ofwork."

Yet, Marshall reckons that a positive workplace designneedn't be grand or on-trend - think beanbags and coffee machines - butadequately geared for the type of work undertaken.

"A good office space is one that caters to theparticular wants and needs of its workforce as best as possible within theconstraints of the building, she said. "For example, employees undertaking largeamounts of analytical work are likely to require a quiet environment, while aHR team might require private spaces for one-to-one conversations."

Marshall continues that that to get the best design,it's important to include staff in any planning processes to get buy-in as wellas an office space that suits everyone.

Importantly, the wellbeing of employees needs to beconsidered, ensuring the workers aren't stressed out by the space the work inand that any changes meet the needs of staff.

And, for her, the dream office space doesn't need tohave an on-site gym, Michelin star food and gadget-type extras. Simply,Marshall explains she'd like "a window with a view", "plenty of natural light"and "plenty of open space."

So, for HR departments looking to upgrade theirworkspace, it's simple - right?
